I designed and carved the original and cast the pieces myself in lead-free pewter. They can be used as pendants or on key chains. Each piece comes in a jewelry pouch with a history card stating the following:
Many stories tell of Francis being a close friend with animals: stories of a pheasant who for years strolled in and out of Francis’s cell, of his bond with the wolf of Gubbio, of his ordering Franciscans to “see to it that the bees would be provided with honey in winter, lest they should die during the cold weather,” of his persuading hunters to release turtle doves.... Francis not only spent a great deal of time with animals, but also healed them, thus his association with vets. This small medal of Francis was carved by Hank Schlau and cast in lead-free pewter.
