I design, carve, and cast the pieces myself: they’re wholly original. I cast them in modified gypsum, a resilient sculptural material. Once the pieces cure, we stain and glaze them. The pieces come boxed, can stand or hang (there's a hook on the back, which is flat and unpainted), and can go outside. Each piece comes with a small "booklet" stating:
"St. Peregrine (1260-1345) was born wealthy and lived a dissolute early life. During a dispute, he struck St. Philip Benizi on the face. St. Philip turned the other cheek, and Peregrine converted. He joined the Servite order and for thirty years, as penance, lived and worked as much as possible in silence and solitude. Later in life, he developed skin cancer on his leg and was scheduled for surgery. He spent the night before the operation in prayer and had a vision of Christ healing him with a touch to his foot. Next morning, Peregrine was healed. Hundreds of miracles have been attributed to him. This sculpture of the saint was handmade by Hank Schlau. In it, Peregrine is depicted in a pose used in classical sculpture to indicate openness to the future. The butterfly on his right shoulder is a symbol of stages (caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly) that we all go through as we pass through a difficult experience."
Dimensions: 6 in. high x 3.5 in. wide x 1.25 in deep at base
