I design, carve, and cast the pieces myself. I cast them in modified gypsum (a very strong building material), and we then glaze them. The pieces come boxed, can stand or hang on a wall (there's a hook on the back, which is flat and unpainted), and can go outside. Each piece comes with a history card stating:
Joseph is the patron of fathers because he was the father of Jesus. The Gospels don't say a great deal about the relation between Joseph and Jesus, though the general portrait of Joseph is of a kind and thoughtful man who loved and protected his son. The fact that Jesus took up Joseph's trade, that of a carpenter, shows Jesus' respect for his father. Joseph is the patron/protector of houses because he was a carpenter, working in the small Galilean towns of Nazareth and Bethlehem in the first century. A carpenter at that time did both small jobs--fixing doors, etc.--and larger projects like building houses. Because Joseph is viewed as a protector of houses and those who live in them, his image is often placed near the entrance or inside houses to watch over the occupants and their guests. This image of Joseph holding a carpenter's square was handmade by Hank Schlau. It is made of an architectural material that can go outside.
Dimensions: 6.5 x 2 x 1 inches
