This statue is meant to offer hope of peace and calm to anyone going through a time of worry, anxiety, or stress. It's intended to be placed on a bedside or desk, so that the person can be reminded not only that relief exists but also that others are thinking of them. Because of Dymphna's history of healing, she is also the patron of psychiatrists and all mental health workers. I design, carve, and cast the pieces myself. I cast them in modified gypsum (a very strong building material) with metal powder. The pieces come boxed and can stand or hang on a wall (there's a hook on the back, which is flat and unpainted) and can go outside. Each piece comes with a history card stating:

"The story of St. Dymphna (7th century, Ireland) is ultimately about healing and wholeness emerging from a difficult time, a story of anxiety, worry, and stress transformed into rejuvenation. She is thus often appealed to in order to overcome anxiety and worry. A practice has evolved whereby people in situations of stress pray and 'give' their anxiety to Dymphna, so that they are relieved of the burden and can see the world and their lives afresh, as blessed. In this statue, Dymphna holds a book, a symbol of wisdom, one of the cures of mental and emotional distress. In her other hand she holds a butterfly, the ancient symbol of Psyche and of the soul and mind, the attributes that St. Dymphna is reputed to help cure. The statue was handmade and hand painted at In the Company of Saints."
